Abstract

Despite developments in inclusive practices, individuals with intellectual disabilities are still exposed to stigma, underrepresentation, and lack of inclusion. With the rise in popularity of digital technologies, there have emerged possibilities to combat this problem through social media marketing strategies. Unfortunately, little research has been devoted to the combined impact of such strategies, storytelling, and audience involvement on the effectiveness of inclusion. This paper suggests the use of a mixed-method approach to study the effect of strategic social media marketing on the process of inclusion. Quantitative data were gathered through questionnaires from 450 social media users, encompassing the general public, caregivers, advocacy staff, and 35 individuals with intellectual disabilities. Qualitative data were gathered via semi-structured interviews with 30 distinct informants, including individuals with intellectual disabilities, their relatives, and advocacy professionals. Quantitative analysis included descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, and regression analysis, while qualitative data was subjected to thematic analysis. It is apparent from the results that social media campaigns greatly increase awareness (M = 4.21) and diminish stigma (M = 3.95) and that personal stories create the most engagement (M = 4.34). Simple linear regression indicates that content exposure significantly predicts positive attitude change (R^2=0.375, F(1,448) =268.40, p<.001, β=0.612). The qualitative findings further emphasize the significance of authentic representation, platform-specific approaches, and the involvement of people with intellectual disabilities. The research offers strategic insights regarding social media marketing as a means of turning digital communication into a tool of empowerment, inclusion, and social support.
